A Look into Roll For It

S and I have recently introduced our friends here to the joys of playing board games. We have a limited amount of games to choose from right now, so our sessions usually involve a game or two of Ticket to Ride: Europe or Tokaido. If we needed a couple of quick games in between as fillers, we normally reach for Roll for It!.

Roll for It! is a game brought to life by designer Chris Leder and publisher Calliope Games. This is one of the many games successfully funded through a Kickstarter campaign.

Roll for It! is a 2-4 player game which focuses on matching the results of your rolled dice to the values of the cards that are face-up. The first player to reach 40 points (or more) wins the game. We only have this red box edition of the game, but you can easily make this into an 8-player game by combining it with the purple box edition. You can also simply purchase the Roll for It! Deluxe edition, which supports 2 to 8 players right out the box.

The game may be very simple, but it gets tricky once multiple players start vying for the same value card. It’s up to you to decide where and how you’ll be splitting your 6 dice. Be the first one to complete the combination on a card, and you get to keep that card and the number of points printed on the bottom.

Since you can’t move a die you’ve already placed, you get a lower chance of rolling for the needed value on your next turn. Thankfully, there’s a special rule in the game where a player can take back all of his/her dice at the beginning of the turn. It’s a risky move, but it might also mean you getting that prized card!

One thing I love about this game is how quickly we can set this game up and have fun with it: Just flip three cards face-up and start rolling dice. The novelty does wear off after a couple of rounds, but it’s a great game to play when you want to loosen up before diving into a more complex board game.

True, good luck is needed to get the combination of dice you want. It can get frustrating when you need just one more die to finish a combination. What’s more frustrating – although more enjoyable for the other player – is when somebody snatches the card you’ve been trying to get right out from under your nose in one go! Moments like that make for a good laugh. 🙂

Overall, I think Roll for It! is a great addition to any gamer’s collection. The small, compact box makes it convenient to take with you during family trips. It’s also not as expensive as other games; we got ours for roughly NZ$30. The replayability, in my opinion, is also quite high. Roll for It! doesn’t require too much thought, but smart dice placement and a bit of good luck can definitely help you win the game! 🙂
